Problem sending messages using Gmail as SMTP
I've got Moodle setup as described on this page using Google Apps for Education as an SMTP server. However, this doesn't work properly as Google forbid the altering of the "From" or "Reply To" header in emails except where explicitly permitted (e.g. The main system email address would have to request permission from every single other user on the system to send as them). From what I have been told by our Google Apps rep, there is nothing that can be done about this. This means that any emails sent from a user are received with a Reply To address of the main moodle email address not the original sender. For this reason I would suggest that Gmail is not suitable for use with Moodle, but if I'm missing anything obvious, please let me know.

:Hi Ian, I would go to the general problems forum with your issue. You could be correct.  I think this would be an issue and should be in the documentation. By the main Moodle email would be the system administrator email :)  While I use gmail for my personal stuff, none of the sites I sometimes work with use it with a Moodle site. --chris collman 15:54, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
:: Hi Chris. What I mean by the main Moodle email address is the account registered with Google Apps and used for SMTP authentication. In my case this is also the sys admin email, but it wouldn't necessarily always be. I did post on the General Problems forum, and got no answers, but someone else saying they had the same issues. http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=161088#p706329 In the end, I setup a virtual SMTP server in IIS and it worked fine using that, but I am fairly certain that there is no possible way of configuring Google Apps for education to use the correct Reply To address, making it in my opinion unsuitable for any multi user installs. Should I add something to this effect to the main page? Ian McNaught
:Hi Ian, Please do add something to the content page.  I tried to add a bit under tricks and tips.  Be sure to mention what it can do as well as what it can not do.  Some may be thrilled what is possible (you never know).  As an aside, I assume we both are saying the reply to in google apps is the one in site admin>Server>email>support email ?  I hate it when nobody answers a post and will jump in after a couple of days with some wild suggestions (just to let somebody know that it was read).  Thanks for your contributions to Moodle and MoodleDocs. --chris collman 11:36, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
::Sure, will add something soon. The "From" email address isn't necessarily the support one, it is the one used with Gmail for SMTP authentication. For example, you might use moodlemail@gmail.com as SMTP username, and moodlesupport@gmail.com for Support email, then the mails would come from moodlemail@gmail.com.

Ian McNaught

Hi Ian, Please do add something to the content page. I tried to add a bit under tricks and tips. Be sure to mention what it can do as well as what it can not do. Sure, will add something soon. The "From" email address isn't necessarily the support one, it is the one used with Gmail for SMTP authentication.
