Contributed code (formerly called "non-standard") has been donated to the Moodle community but is not included in the standard Moodle package. While, initially presented as contributed code, some  of these Modules and Plugins end up in future standard packages of Moodle.  
Contributed code, or "contrib" for short, is understood to be all code contributed to Moodle which is not included in the standard Moodle distribution. Prior to June 2008, it was often refered to a "non-standard code" or a "non-standard module or block".

When upgrading a Moodle site, some of the contributed code may not work.  And while a great deal of effort maybe put into developing a specific code to make it compatible with every aspect and feature, it is not part of the standard package.
