In contrast to an administrator, a course creator cannot modify settings for the entire Moodle site unless they have been specifically assigned permission to these functions.
You may type the summary of the resource here. This will be displayed on the resources index page. The summary is also displayed below the Moodle navigation controls in the top frame, if the window settings are set to open the linked resource in frames.

Location
Type in the url of the file or web page here. You may use the two buttons below to help you.

* Choose or upload a file... - If you click on this button, a popup window will appear with the course files. You will be able to browse the files and choose (option located to the right of the file) the one which you want to make available as a resource. If the file is not there you can upload it first.
* Search for web page... - If you click on this button, a popup window will appear with the Google search engine. You can use Google to search the web for a webpage which you want to make available as a resource.

Window
These settings can be hidden/shown by clicking the button labeled Hide settings or Show settings.

Usually, resources are displayed in a normal framed window with the Moodle navigation controls in the top frame. If you choose, you can remove this frame and have the resource fill the window like a normal web page.
Determine the size window you wish to open.<br>Many people still use an average screen resolution of 800x600. In most cases it's best if you initially size your window a little smaller than that, like 600 high and 480 wide.<br>If you leave these fields blank then the new popup window will be exactly the same size as the window they clicked on to get the popup.

Parameters
Note: parameters are quite an advanced feature. Some knowledge of how web forms pass information to web pages is required.

The parameter settings are completely optional, and are only useful when you need to pass some Moodle information to the resource file or web site. If you define any parameters they will be passed to the resource as part of the URL (using the GET method). The left column allows you to choose information to send, and the right column allows you to give it a name. Note that the user information will be from the user who is looking at this resource, and the course information is from the course that this resource is part of.

An example is to send users to the URL http://www.google.com/search. This is the page that returns search results for your Google searches but, if you go there directly, without specifying what you wish to search for, you just get the standard Google search screen. Google expects a parameter called q that tells it what to look for. If you select a parameter, any will do but in this example we'll use Surname, and give it the name q then every user will see a page of search results based upon the Surname stored in their profile.

A slightly more useful example can be seen on the front page of Moodle.org. The Documentation link (second from the top on the left-hand side) uses paramaters to add the language specified in the user's profile to the link. Try changing your language before clicking on the link and see where you end up. (Bear in mind that if no MoodleDocs exists for a language, you will be redirected to the English documentation).

In general this feature provides a powerful way to connect Moodle to external web resources that are logically divided up by Geographic Region, Course or User details etc. For example you may already have all your past course papers available ordered by course code. This allows a standard course template to be created that points to different places when the course code is changed. If the external source cannot accept connections in the standard format that Moodle provides, and you have access and control over the external source, then a server add-on called mod_rewrite could be used to make them interoperate.

Visible to students
You can hide the resource from students by selecting "Hide" here. It is useful if you wouldn't like to make the activity available immediately.

Course admin

This option in the administration block is only available to course teachers and site administrators. It allows teachers to upload files such as PDFs, Multimedia, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and so on into your course. In fact it allows you to upload any digital content for inclusion in an activity, resource, course section or a direct download.

Following the Files link in the administration block lets you see a list of uploaded course files arranged under four headings:
*file name,
*file size,
*the last time a given file was modified,
*and the action you can do with a given file (or folder).

By ticking the box on the left to the file name and using the drop down box on the left below the file list, you can:
*move the files you choose to another folder,
*delete them completely or
*create a zip archive.

There are two more actions you can undertake:
*'Make a folder' and
*'Upload a file' -

Both are positioned on the right-hand side of the screen under the list.

To upload a file from your hard drive use the 'Upload a file' action. If necessary you can first Make a Folder and open it before to upload the file.

NOTE: Whilst uploading is restricted to one file at a time you can upload a zip containing many files. Once uploaded Moodle will recognise the file as a zip and show on unzip link. You can then follow the unzip link which will extract the file(s) within.

To preview any file you have uploaded just click on its name. Your web browser will take care of either displaying it or downloading it to your computer.

HTML and text files can be edited in-place online. Other files will need to be edited on your local computer and uploaded again. if you upload a file with the same name as an existing file it will automatically be overwritten.

When viewing the course files in a new course you will notice there are already directories present. These are for storing course data and any course backup zip files.

You can also create a directory and display the whole contents of that directory using the setting in the add resource drop down in a course section.

Moodle Sub-directories
There are two standard sub-directories that are used by Moodle for storing data, namely the backupdata and moddata directories which are not available to students and teachers without editing privilages. As mentioned above, there are other subdirectories that can be seen by students.

CH Software's WOS - Webserver on a Stick packages a complete Apache/PHP/MySQL webserver with a wrapper that automatically configures and starts the servers; the Small Edition takes only 20 Mb. It is published under the GNU GPL.

The complete package with a vanilla Moodle 1.5.3, WOS Portable SE 1.1.1, Apache 2.0.5, PHP 5.1.2 (and 4.4.1), and MySQL 4.1.18-nt - all free, open source software - occupies less than 100Mb.

Installation

For best results you should always install and run WOS from the root directory of a drive. The first time it's run, WOS configures the paths for the servers based on the current directory.

<big>Note: Make sure you stop IIS service which may already be running on your PC.</big>

1. Start by downloading the latest versions of WOS Portable or WOS Portable Small Edition.

2. Unzip the file and copy to your USB Stick.
Switch to the stick and double click start.exe to begin the WOS installation.

3. Choose your language, then click through the Terms of Use.
WOS starts up and displays the WOS Status dialog box and opens your web browser to the WOS start page

* You should now see the follow on the WOS startup page.
Apache 2.0.55 is running
PHP 5.1.2 works (or PHP4 if you configured it that way)
MySql 4.1.18-nt is running
Document Root is: F:/www

4. Setup your Database
Click on the PHPMyAdmin link on the Start page.
In PHPMyAdmin, type a name for your database. ie: 'moodle' and click Enter.

4. Now Download your preferred version of Moodle from the Moodle Download page
and unzip the file to your www directory on the USB stick.

5. Run Moodle Installation.
Using the directory and settings above, the URL is http://localhost/moodle/install.php.
Now you simply work through the normal Moodle installation procedures.
NOTE: During the databases setup, use root as the database user and leave the password field blank (warning: security risk if opening to your LAN/WAN
It should work just like it does on the web or on your hard drive windows installation.

Troubleshooting

Moodle requires a number of PHP settings to be active for it to work. On most servers these will already be the default settings. However, I noticed the WOS package required register_globals needed to be turned off and magic_quotes gpc turned On. These are defined in PHP's configuration file (usually called php.ini):

WOS Portable is freeware, and there is no official support.

If you have a problem after running through the above, try the troubleshooting hints on the WOS Wiki.
