How many Moodle users are there?

We can never really know the full usage of Moodle, because Moodle is open source and free and download and distribute. Very often we find people will not inform us about their sites.

However many sites HAVE registered with us, you can browse them all on the Moodle Sites page, and see up-to-date summary data on the Moodle Statistics page.

How statistics are collected and maintained

Registration

Sites can choose to register themselves with Moodle.org via the registration button in their administration pages. This sends basic data about the site including how many courses, users and enrolments it has. Sites without enough users, courses and data to be a real site are not accepted.

Moderation

A group of about volunteers monitors new registrations and checks them manually (using a tool we built) to ensure they are real Moodle sites. This ensures that test sites or fake sites do not even make it onto the list.

Maintenance

Like most of the web, sites come and go. Since we strive to make our Moodle statistics accurate, we need to maintain our list to clean out old data.

A sophisticated automated site checker process runs once a week, visiting every one of our registered sites and evaluating 21 separate factors to decide whether the site is a legitimate Moodle site.

Sites that do not pass these tests are marked as invalid. If a site is found to be invalid for two weeks in a row then it is removed from the list and taken out of all statistics.
