Talk:2.0

From MoodleDocs

Thanks Tim, I was going to invite you to cast your eye over the Quiz section in particular. Beat me to it. Leaving your inline comments in for now. Spam from Tim Hunt? That'd be first. Perhaps we put up something fairly 'generic', not as rich out there with caveat of upcoming 2.1 changes. Also, a common 'format' for Docs on each of these activities would help people navigate and contribute. Something along those lines:

  • Overview (a brief, one pager with key links and a pic or two of the tool in use)
  • Options (main variations within activity, eg. Question types, Question bank ...)
  • Tutorial('how to's' in one place)
  • Good practice/examples (as the title suggests...)
  • FAQ (ideally linking to much of the stuff above)
  • See also/References (links to useful forum discussions, sources of info, groups etc)

Working on it. --Tomaz Lasic 02:29, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Common format seems sensible. Good luck finding one that copes well with all the different activities ;-)--Tim Hunt 07:06, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Blocks

Re your comment "several pages in this section really better in Admin/Developer ..." under blocks. I said this before, about some quiz stuff. I think in some situations, it is better to keep all the relevant information on one screen, just with clear signposting about who each bit of information is aimed at. At the point where a teacher is moving from basic usage of a feature towards more advanced usage, they may well need to go and talk to their administrator about setting something up. In that case, it is useful if they know what docs to point the admin at, and if they can skim-read that in advance. Similarly, it can be helpful if the admin can readily see described the simple things that teachers mostly do. Conversely, if the page is getting too long, teacher/admin or basic/advanced are a sensible way to split it, providing you have good links.

Anyway, my real point is that the path from Teacher unfamiliar with Moodle, to Experience Moodling teacher, to Superuser teacher to admin is a continum, not a set of discrete roles. I just invite you do consider this before finally deciding what to do.--Tim Hunt 07:48, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Think about the "New to Moodle" heading

Do you need to distinguish:

  • People who are completely new to using an LMS / VLE.
  • People who have used a different VLE, but not Moodle, before.

Common format(s)

Thanks for your input Tim. Draft template for different items. Trying to make it really clear in terms of concepts and at the same time match Moodle actions and views. We'll start with activities...

'Activity' module

[Activity]

  • Brief general info about activity, maybe an enticing screenshot or two of it in action.

[Activity] settings

  • Annotated screenshot of what you see when you click on Edit [activity] in Settings block
  • initial settings
  • different types explained or at least linked to page that explain them
  • items that may need Admin turning on referred to here as well

Editing [activity]

  • Annotated screenshot of what you see when you click on edit icon on the main course page
  • Common workflows, examples would be great

Viewing [activity]

  • Viewing options (teacher & student); most activities have this item in existing Docs

[activity] permissions

  • Every activity has them, important for Admins particularly and those adventurous with roles

Uses of [activity]

  • Examples (links, screenshots...)
  • Creative practices

[Activity] tips and tricks

  • Self-explanatory, things people will add as we go along...

Parts of Moodle related to [activity]

  • List of, explanation of eg. related blocks, reports etc.

Third-party modules and plugins related to [activity]

  • Link to the database and listed related and/or similar 3rd party contrib

Community discussion about [activity]

  • Link to the forum on Moodle.org (and other places?) where [activity] is discussed

Useful links related to [activity]

  • Links added by community members
  • Category links

[Activity] FAQ

  • FAQ as they come along

For me, this works for the simplest module like Choice or Chat to something complex like Quiz.
