What is a grouping?
A grouping, in Moodle 1.9 onwards, is a collection of groups. Groups normally exist within a grouping, but it is possible to create a group which doesn't belong to any grouping.
What is the difference between a group and a grouping?
How do I enable the groupings feature?
By default, the groupings feature is disabled. To enable it, tick the enablegroupings checkbox in Administration > Miscellaneous > Experimental.
A groupings tab will then appear on the Groups page.

At the same time 'Available for group members only" feature was added and unfortunately it was controlled by the same option as groupings, this feature is known to have problems and is still considered experimental in Moodle 2.x
In Moodle 2.0 the creation of groupings is always enabled, but the 'Available for group members only' is still considered experimental.
Why does a graded activity assigned to a particular grouping only appear in the gradebook for all users?
The gradebook does not currently consider group members only functionality. (See MDL-13868 for details.) It is recommended that separate courses are used instead.
